How to get an appointment

The quickest way is online. Through our booking system — the OneDoc platform — you can see free slots in real time and choose the location, your concern and your preferred time yourself. One note, so that you are not left searching: not all locations, services and doctors have been enabled for online booking yet. If you cannot find your concern there, that is not a fault — simply pick up the telephone.

By telephone you can reach us on the central number +41 44 500 69 00, or directly at the location: Zurich +41 44 422 25 55, Wetzikon +41 44 930 61 00, Meilen +41 44 923 03 81. If you are unsure which consultation is the right one, simply describe your concern on the telephone. Working that out is our job, not yours.

In writing you can reach us by e-mail to info@sehklinik.ch or through the contact form — tell us your preferred location and two or three possible time slots.

A spontaneous visit without prior notice cannot be guaranteed. We therefore recommend arranging your appointment in advance.

What to bring to your appointment

Bring your insurance card with you — we need it in order to register you. A referral from your family doctor or from another practice is welcome, but it is not a requirement: you can also register with us directly. If a referral does exist, please bring it; it tells us what the matter is and who is expecting the report. For our usual services you do not need a Kostengutsprache — your insurer's advance written confirmation that it will cover the costs.

Bring with you as well whatever concerns your sight: your current glasses, including your reading glasses, and, if you wear contact lenses, the details of those. If you wear contact lenses, it makes sense to switch to glasses on the day of the examination — lenses can alter the measurements taken at the cornea.

Also helpful are an up-to-date list of your medicines, including eye drops, and earlier findings if you have any: reports, operation reports, OCT scans, visual fields. Older documents are valuable too, because they show the course over time — and the course often says more than a single reading.

How your first appointment runs

You register at reception. Your details are taken there and your concern is briefly recorded — this is the moment in which you hand over the referral and any findings you have brought with you.

After that, as a rule, comes a preliminary examination by our medical staff: visual acuity, measurement of the pressure inside the eye and, depending on your concern, further measurements and imaging. This part is preparation, not assessment — the results go to the doctor.

The medical examination follows. Here the readings that have been taken are set alongside your symptoms, you receive an understandable explanation of the findings and, if treatment is a possibility, the options together with what argues against them. Ask in that conversation about everything that is on your mind. If a further examination or a second appointment is needed, we tell you so directly.

Expect the pupil to be dilated in order to assess the back of the eye. The drops go on working for several hours: you will see blurred at close range and be sensitive to light. Do not drive yourself afterwards — come by public transport, arrange to be collected, and bring sunglasses with you. On days like these, allow a little more time as well.

If you would like to cancel or reschedule

Appointments can be moved; that is normal. Please contact the location concerned by telephone as early as you can — Zurich +41 44 422 25 55, Wetzikon +41 44 930 61 00, Meilen +41 44 923 03 81 — or call +41 44 500 69 00. The earlier we know, the sooner someone else who is waiting for an appointment can use the slot.

Please let us know up to 24 hours before the agreed time if you are unable to keep the appointment. We do not charge a no-show fee — for us this is about the slot becoming free, not about an invoice. The earlier, the better for other patients.

Acute symptoms and emergencies

With acute symptoms, do not wait for the next free online appointment. Call us — Zurich +41 44 422 25 55, Wetzikon +41 44 930 61 00, Meilen +41 44 923 03 81 or +41 44 500 69 00 — and describe what you are noticing. We then decide together how quickly things need to move.

Contact us the same day if you notice any of the following signs: sudden loss of sight in one eye, newly appearing flashes of light, a sudden shower of many new black dots or flecks in your field of vision (in German 'Russregen', a soot shower), a shadow or curtain moving in from the side of your field of vision, suddenly distorted vision, a severely red and painful eye, or an injury to the eye. These signs can be harmless — from the outside that cannot be told apart, at a dilated pupil it can. A new shower of floaters of this kind belongs in an ophthalmic examination within 24 hours.

Outside our consultation hours, turn to the ophthalmic emergency service or to the emergency department of an eye clinic; we do not run an emergency service of our own. The Canton of Zurich's Ärztefon (0800 33 66 55) can help as well; if life is in immediate danger, call the ambulance (144). If your eye has suffered a chemical burn, rinse it immediately and thoroughly with water and then seek ophthalmic help without delay.

For referring physicians

If you would like to refer a patient, you do not need this page. Referrals have a route of their own, with appointments at short notice for urgent cases, structured transmission of findings and direct liaison with your practice; the details and the referral form as a PDF are on the page for referring physicians.

You can send us a referral by telephone or by e-mail. Our team will be in touch with you to coordinate the appointment.
