Eye & Lid Check
What the Eye & Lid Check is
The Eye & Lid Check is a free online check that takes about three minutes. You answer a few questions about your eyes or your eyelids and then learn which topics are frequently discussed in connection with them in an ophthalmic consultation. It is intended as an aid to orientation: for the moment in which you notice something but cannot judge whether it is worth an appointment.
At the start you choose one of two areas. 'Vision & quality of sight' is about blurred vision, glare, haloes around light sources and reading at close range. 'Eyelids — function & appearance' is about heavy lids, hooded lids, a restricted upper field of vision and a tired-looking expression — functional as much as aesthetic.
In both areas you can optionally add a short self-check using your device's camera. In the lid check this estimates lid position, lid opening, lid closure and blinking; in the vision check it estimates only your viewing distance. The camera is voluntary: the check works without it too, and you can stop at any time.
What the check is not
This is not a medical diagnosis, not a medical opinion and not medical advice. The check does not examine you. It does not replace an ophthalmic assessment, and it can neither establish a condition nor rule one out.
What you see at the end is deliberately kept general: a summary of what you yourself have stated, together with information on which topics can lie behind it. It is expressly not a finding about you. The values from the optional camera step are likewise estimates for educational purposes, not the results of measurements taken in an examination.
Your answers do not establish any treatment relationship with SehKlinik AG. For an individual assessment of your eye health, please consult an ophthalmologist in person. And independently of this check: with sudden loss of sight, new flashes of light, a sudden shower of black dots in your field of vision, a moving shadow or a painful red eye, do not fill in an online check — call us or turn to the ophthalmic emergency service.
How the check runs
First: you choose an area and answer the questions. There are six to seven short questions, mostly about how often you notice something — never, sometimes, often, very often. There is no free text.
Second, and voluntary: the self-check with the camera. You hold the device at roughly arm's length and at eye level, your face centred in the picture, and follow the short prompts — look straight ahead, blink, look up and down, close your eyes gently. You can skip this step or break it off part-way through.
Third: you receive your summary on screen — generally worded topics that fit what you have stated. After that you decide whether it ends there. You can simply close the page; you can request the result by e-mail; or you can ask for an appointment for a consultation. For the e-mail and for the appointment request we need a separate consent, which you give separately.
What happens to your data
Your camera is evaluated exclusively in your browser. Measurement points on the face are determined from the live image. No images, no video recordings and no measurement points are stored or transmitted — neither to us nor to third parties. The evaluation takes place entirely on your device; the software needed for it is loaded from our own server. The estimated values are displayed to you and then discarded. No camera-based values are transmitted when your result is sent by e-mail or when you request an appointment either.
It is different with the questionnaire, and we say so plainly, because the difference matters: your answers are transmitted to our analytics platform for evaluation — as answer numbers, not as free text. We operate that platform ourselves; the data is processed on our behalf and within the EU/EEA.
If you request your result by e-mail or ask for an appointment, we receive your e-mail address together with the information as to which area you chose and how pronounced your interest in a consultation is. Details of individual symptoms are not transmitted in the process.
Estimates relating to your eyelids are health data and therefore particularly sensitive personal data. We process them exclusively locally on your device and exclusively on the basis of your express consent. That consent is separate from the consent to analytics and is obtained separately. You can withdraw it at any time with effect for the future. The full details — including how long what is kept — are in our privacy policy.
When the check is worthwhile
The eyelid area fits if you notice something about your lids and are unsure whether it is a functional or an aesthetic matter: if you raise your forehead in order to open your eyes better; if the upper lids grow heavy towards evening; if the upper field of vision seems restricted; if hooded lids or excess skin on the upper lid bother you; if people tell you that you look tired although you are rested. That very boundary — function or appearance — is one of the most common questions in the consultation, and it is part of what decides how a treatment is billed.
The vision area fits if your sight has changed without your being able to pin it down: blurred vision, glare against the light or at night at the wheel, haloes around light sources, difficulty reading small print, colours duller than they used to be.
The check is not worthwhile with acute symptoms — for those it is too slow and too general. It is likewise not worthwhile if you already have a diagnosis and a treatment plan; a conversation with the doctor treating you will then give you more than a general summary.
What happens after the check
Nothing happens automatically. If you do nothing further after the summary, the check ends there — there is no registration, no account and nothing stored in the browser.
If you would like to go further, the next step is a consultation: the eyelid consultation for the eyelid area, an eye check for the vision area. There, what an online check cannot do takes place — examination on the equipment, assessment by a doctor, and an interpretation that relates to you and not to an average. Do bring your summary with you; it does not replace a conversation, but it helps as a way in.
You arrange an appointment online through our booking system or by telephone at the location of your choice. If you become unsure in the meantime, or if something changes, call us rather than filling in the check again.
