Peter Eschstruth is a specialist in ophthalmology focusing on glaucoma, dry eyes, and macular and retinal disease. After studying medicine at the Philipps-Universität Marburg (Philipps University of Marburg) and completing his specialist training at the Marburg university eye hospital, he ran his own ophthalmology practice in Kiel for fourteen years. Most recently he served as deputy medical director in the Vista group in Davos and Chur. Since his dissertation, his scientific interest has been glaucoma therapy — from preservative-free medication to surgical pressure reduction.

scientific work on glaucoma therapy
From a research question into practice
Does relaxation lower intraocular pressure? That question began Peter Eschstruth's scientific engagement with glaucoma: in his dissertation at the Philipps-Universität Marburg (2004) he studied the influence of acoustic and imaginative relaxation methods on intraocular pressure in primary open-angle glaucoma. The question behind it is still his subject today: glaucoma does not hurt — and it cannot be dealt with in a single procedure. It demands a therapy carried over years, with medication that spares the ocular surface. That is exactly why preservative-free glaucoma therapy and structured follow-up are at the centre of his work. In practice the subject has been with him since 2005, when he introduced a glaucoma consultation of his own.
